Garden historians are able to trace this plant back to ancient Crete, so it has certainly stood the test of time, which is no mean feat considering all the new cultivars coming onto the market each year. It produces its trumpet-shaped flowers in midsummer - and they look stunning as well as smelling divine. Here in the UK, it has long been a firm favourite in the cottage garden, which suits it right down to the ground, as it will thrive in a spot where they are kept well fed, and tucked in amongst other plants, which will help shade them at the base. - Garden care: The foliage of this lily appears in the autumn, so do not be too concerned if your bulbs arrive with green shoots. This is a natural part of the bulbs’ life cycle and they can be planted as normal with their shoots intact. Unlike many other lilies, they also prefer to be planted quite close to the surface of the soil, so plant them about 5-10cm deep and 15cm apart. Stake with ring stakes or bamboo canes in spring before the flowers appear. Deadhead the faded blooms and cut the stems back to ground level at the end of autumn.
