Longstock Park herbaceous border

One of the key features of the Waitrose Longstock Park Nursery is the historic 80 metre herbaceous border, set within a walled garden. Throughout the year the border creates a fabulous display, through Mark and his team's careful selection of complementary colours and textures.

In early autumn, there are still plenty of late blooms to add colour, backed by russets and burnished golds; although the effect is spectacular, it's not difficult to recreate a little piece in a border at home. Simply click on the icons in the image below to learn more about the key plants in the display and add your favourites to your wheelbarrow. What could be better inspiration to get out and gardening this autumn?

Stonecrop - ‘Autumn Joy’

Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’

A pretty succulent topped with salmon-pink flowers in summer, maturing to pinkish-bronze then coppery-red in autumn. This versatile perennial is perfect for a sunny, well-drained spot in the middle of your border, where the flowerheads will provide structure and colour in the winter garden. They’re also a valuable late source of nectar for bees and butterflies.

Gaura - 'Whirling Butterflies'

Gaura lindheimeri

This exceptionally long-flowering perennial, with slender, grey-green leaves, looks naturally at home in the midst of the border, either as a mid-section filler, or catching the breeze among soft grasses. This variety is particularly free-flowering, drought-tolerant and will soak up the sun. Give it space, as its wispy stems will lean over other plants and pathways.

Catmint - 'Walker's Low'

Nepeta racemosa

Bees love this attractive aromatic perennial with its vibrant deep violet to lilac-blue flowers. It makes excellent, long-flowering, groundcover for any sunny border. Clipped back after the first flush in June, it will flower through to early autumn. Useful as an informal, scented edge for paths at the front of the border as, when trodden on, the foliage releases a pleasant aroma.

Stonecrop - 'Ruby Glow'

Sedum

A striking succulent, with greenish-purple leaves topped with large, flat heads of ruby-red, star-shaped flowers from mid-summer to early autumn. This low-growing form of sedum is perfect for softening the front of a sunny, well-drained border. Best planted in generous drifts, the flowers are a valuable nectar source for butterflies and bees.

Verbena - ‘Purple Top’

Verbena bonariensis

This stylish perennial has been enjoying a resurgence in recent years. Perfect for a sheltered, sunny, well-drained spot, its open, transparent shape means it can easily be used towards the middle or even front of the border despite its height. It makes a good filler, because the upright stems support neighbouring plants. Will sustain bees and butterflies well into autumn.

Chinese Silver Grass

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'

This statuesque grass will extend the season of interest in the border, with fine, arching leaves and silky brown flowers that hang like tassels in late summer and last well into the autumn. With its striking foliage and stature, this grass is perfect for adding structure and movement to the back of the border.

Black-Eyed Susan - ‘Early Bird Gold’

Rudbeckia fulgida

These easy to grow perennials feature golden daisy-like flowers that add a splash of rich colour to stand out throughout the border, whether planted at the front, or further back under taller plants. Maximise the effect by planting in large clumps. It’s possible for some to flower from early summer through to autumn, offering a dramatic display for many months.

Coral Bells - 'Palace Purple'

Heuchera villosa

This popular Heuchera is mainly grown for its distinctive shiny, almost metallic, dark burgundy leaves. It looks particular effective planted in large drifts and contrasted with other stand-out foliage colours. This semi-evergreen makes an eye-catching addition to the front of the border, preferably in dappled shade.

Ice Plant - ‘Brilliant’

Sedum spectabile

The large, flat heads of bright pinkish-mauve flowers will continue to flower late into the autumn on this award-winning ice plant. It will make a great feature in a sunny spot towards the front of the border, planted in bold drifts to maximise the effect of the vibrant flower colour. Once they’ve finally finished, the flowerheads make attractive dried-flowers too.
