The new foliage emerges in spring a vibrant red, and as it ages it deepens in colour, turning rich claret until the autumn when it becomes a brighter shade once again before it falls. In shadier conditions, where the foliage is shaded by the outermost leaves, it may turn greenish, but it will usually retain a mahogany blush. This is a compact Japanese maple, that makes a superb specimen in borders or large containers.
- Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
