A deciduous flowering shrub with suckering roots grown for its large and heart-shaped foliage. Emerging a vivid bright pink in spring, the leaves gently fade to pale pink in summer, before re-igniting in autumn when they turn a multitude of fiery hues. Alchornea’s stems shoot from ground level, growing well in sheltered compact gardens or mixed borders that need height and colour. Great for sheltered banks where the suckering habit can be used to natural effect. Clusters of tiny, red and green flowers appear along the stems in summer.

  • Garden care: Pruning isn’t necessary, but you may want to remove the suckers in early spring to prevent them from spreading. Water well until established and apply a thick layer of mulch to protect the roots in winter. Shelter from cold winds.
