Creating a wonderful specimen in the winter garden, the bare stems of this Himalayan birch will provide a striking wintery silhouette, which can be further enhanced by underplanting with snowdrops. Unlike many of the other birches, this one takes just 3 or 4 years to develop its snowy colour, so it makes a good choice if you'd like a quick return on your investment! It will eventually grow into a big tree, but as the canopy remains light and airy, it rarely feels oppressive.

This Betula is single-stemmed, but they can be planted close together to create a multi-stemmed effect.

  • Garden care: Plant as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged conditions). Incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Requires minimal pruning, remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.
