Displaying striking bracts with random pale pink and white markings, Bougainvillea × buttiana 'Coconut Ice' is a vigorous Mediterranean climber that provides a bold splash of colour from July to September. Ideal for conservatories in the UK, this plant can also be placed on sunny patios during warmer months but needs frost protection as temperatures drop. It grows quickly, reaching over 4 metres outdoors but remains more compact in containers. With thorny woody stems and soft, ovate green leaves, this cultivar thrives in well-drained soil and offers year-round greenery if kept above 10°C.
For optimal growth as a conservatory pot plant in the UK, place Bougainvillea in a bright, sunny spot with plenty of light, as this encourages flowering. During the growing season, water moderately and feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser. It’s essential to maintain temperatures above 10°C, as this plant goes dormant below this, shedding its leaves and flowers. When dormant, keep it on the dry side until it begins growing again. Water sparingly during winter and repot or top-dress the compost in spring. Light trimming during the growing season will help keep it compact and bushy. With proper care, your Bougainvillea can live for over 50 years.
