Quite possibly the best hornbeam for autumn colour. 'Lochglow' has an unassuming coat of green, deeply-ribbed foliage that is set ablaze in autumn with fiery tones of orange and red. This deciduous tree leans towards semi-evergreen, often holding some of its leaves throughout winter. In late spring, green catkins emerge and clusters of winged fruit appear later in the year. Rockhampton Red has superb environmental credentials, its form is well suited to providing habitat for wildlife and once mature, it will offer high carbon storage.

  • Garden care: Plant Rockhampton Red as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). Incorporate well-rotted organic matter into the planting hole and stake and support firmly. Requiring little pruning, this hornbeam can be pruned for shape in winter.
