Purple-blue, ‘corn-like’ flowerheads erupt into slender, purple petals like butterfly wings, fluttering above the linear, highly aromatic, grey-green leaves. ‘Lusi Purple’ is a compact French lavender, popular with bees and other nectar-loving insects, which flowers earlier in the season than its English cousins. Plant in a protected, sunny border or, in colder regions, grow in pots to be easily transported to a cool greenhouse or conservatory during the winter.

  • Garden care: When planting, incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole and surrounding area. Keep plants compact by cutting back the spent flower stalks after they have faded. Then, in April, trim back again, taking care not to cut into the old wood.
