The flowers of this deciduous grass have a light, open habit, which creates a gossamer haze above the foliage. Therefore, it's ideal for weaving through a mixed or herbaceous border, where the purple, feathery spikelets will create gentle movement as they catch every breeze. A native of moorland, it will flourish on most soils as long as they are not too dry, and its interest lasts well into winter.

  • Garden care:
Plant in a well-prepared bed, lightly conditioned with well-rotted compost or manure. Cut back stems close to ground level from late February through to the end of March. Cut stems can be left on border as natural mulch or added to the compost heap.
