Clouds of delicate trumpet blooms transform from pristine white through blush pink to deep magenta, all stages visible simultaneously in a long season display.

Nicotiana mutabilis creates a mesmerising, tall spectacle, its branching stems dancing above a rosette of broad, oval leaves throughout summer. This sophisticated flowering tobacco puts on an ever-evolving performance as each in its own pace, resulting in a billowing mass of colour that becomes increasingly dramatic as the season progresses.

Perfect for twilight gardens where its evening fragrance can be appreciated, this statuesque annual makes an equally stunning cut flower, bringing its colour-shifting magic from garden to vase in a continuous display that only improves with time.

  • Garden care:
Keep the soil or compost moist by watering regularly during dry spells and feed with a balanced fertiliser every fourteen days. Although usually grown as an annual, plants that are protected with a dry mulch may survive mild winters where temperatures only occasionally fall below -5°C (23°F).

Early sowings can be undertaken under glass at approximately 20°C (68°F), in trays or pots filled with good quality seed compost. Surface sow thinly and water from the bottom of the pots by sitting them in a tray of water for a short time when necessary. When large enough to handle, grow on in small pots and gradually harden off before planting outside at 45cm intervals after frost. As the seeds are so small it may help to mix them with a little sand before sowing. This will help you keep track of where they are and also avoid overcrowding.
