With grey-green tops to the serrated leaves and silvery felt undersides, Olearia macrodonta looks similar to holly but is soft to the touch. A great all year round evergreen sporting fragrant masses of daisy-like clusters that has contributed to it being awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its many desirable qualities. Deer, pollution and salt tolerant, it is suitable as hedging plants or windbreaks, especially in coastal areas.

  • Garden care: Remove the faded flowerheads using garden shears after they have faded, trimming back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant. After pruning, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
