This gorgeous Portuguese squill forms a basal cluster of slender green leaves, from which upright stems are jettisoned in late spring or early summer, each crowned with masses of star-like, violet-blue flowers. It looks spectacular in borders or pots, and being hardier than many of the other forms, it will happily become established in milder regions. Also, once it has had the chance to settled in, it tends to produce a fresh batch of foliage each autumn, and this offers some winter interest.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 8cm (3in) deep in autumn in naturalistic drifts. Remove faded foliage in autumn, and at the same time, apply a dry, insulating mulch around the base of the plants. Potted plants can be moved to a sheltered spot (eg. an unheated greenhouse) in winter in colder regions.
