This shrub is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: March
  • Hardiness: tender (will need winter protection)

A wonderfully exotic looking shrub with dark green, almost black, lance-shaped leaves, which provide the perfect backdrop for for its unusual, cone-shaped, flowers. A Mexican petunia, 'Asam' will add a touch of drama to the mixed border or patio.

  • Garden care: Remove dead, diseased or misplaced branches in late winter or early spring. Offer winter protection in cold or exposed positions and avoid overwatering during the colder months.
