One of the best walnuts for production in the UK. Relatively late into leaf, 'Broadview' misses all but the late frosts though would benefit from some protection during flowering time if the nights are chilly. The tasty nuts ripen in autumn and are ready when the tough outer casing cracks. Best eaten once they are picked and dried, though green walnuts are good for pickling and and cooking.

A grafted tree, it should start to produce fruit within 3-4 years after planting.

  • Garden care:
Though a relatively compact variety if left unpruned they can reach up to 6-7m tall when mature, however with regular careful pruning they can easily be maintained at around 3-4m tall. Regular pruning will also encourage bigger crops of nuts. Pruning should be undertaken between late summer and autumn to avoid excessive bleeding. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly.
