Dense, ascending branches with aromatic, steel-blue leaves form a narrow, pencil-shaped plant that is valuable for adding structure and punctuating a planting scheme. Planted in groups of three, Juniperus scopulorum 'Blue Arrow' is particularly useful for introducing a feeling of formality into the landscape.
Choose a site with well-drained soil, ideally slightly acidic, and a sunny position to encourage vibrant growth and colour.
Avoid waterlogged areas, as junipers are drought-tolerant once established but dislike overly wet conditions. Mulch around the base of the plant in late winter with organic material like bark or wood chips, keeping the mulch clear of the crown to prevent rot.
Pruning is rarely needed, but you can remove any wayward or damaged shoots in autumn to maintain the plant’s natural symmetry. Ensure plenty of space for the plant to spread and develop its natural shape without overcrowding.
