Winner of "Plant of the Year" at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013, this is the first mahonia of its kind to have spine-free leaves, which means that they can be planted near to paths or doorways where you may brush past them. 'Soft Caress' is a compact, evergreen shrub, so it is ideal for larger pots, where it will provide year-round interest. Alternatively, it will make a fine addition to either a sunny or partially shaded border.
This Mahonia is adaptable to a range of light conditions, though foliage colour and flower performance are best produced in light shade to full sun. Ensure the soil is well-draining yet moisture-retentive, as this plant thrives in humus-rich, slightly acidic soils.
When planting, dig a hole slightly deeper than the root ball and incorporate plenty of organic matter to enrich the soil. Space plants 3-4 feet apart to allow for the natural, bushy growth habit. Be sure to water regularly during the first year to establish a deep, robust root system.
Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base in spring. After flowering, prune lightly to shape, trimming back any overlong or leggy stems to a side shoot or whorl of foliage. Reapply mulch each spring to retain moisture and feed the plant.
