An attractive, deciduous tree with large, glossy, dark green pinnate leaves. In late spring and early summer, inconspicuous flowers are produced which are followed in autumn by one of the most valuable nuts grown in Britain, walnuts. Juglans nigra is a good specimen tree for a large garden or a park.

  • Garden care:
Plant in a sunny, open position with plenty of space for its developing canopy and deep root system. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted compost into the hole and stake firmly. Keep it well watered for the first couple of seasons and mulch in spring to help conserve moisture.

Avoid heavy pruning, as walnut dislikes hard cuts, and once established it becomes low-maintenance, thriving in most well-drained soils. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late summer to early winter to prevent bleeding.
