  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Fast
  • Flowering: June to July
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (but short-lived)

A majestic and impressive perennial with handsome foliage, this angelica also produces rounded umbels up to 25cm across, of small green flowers in early summer. Ideally suited to a reliably moist soil in partial to full shade, it has a striking achitectural presence and looks wonderful at the back of the border. Often short-lived, it will usually die back after flowering, but will self-seed freely if the conditions are favourable.

  • Garden care:
Being short-lived, this plant usually dies after flowering, but if flowering is prevented, or if the spent flowers are removed before they set seed, then it will often go on to flower again for a second year.

  • Sowing instructions:
As the seed requires light to germinate, surface sow - either directly onto a well-prepared bed in late spring or early summer, or onto compost-filled modules in late summer or autumn. Germination can take 2-3 weeks, but when large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 15cm (6") intervals, and then transplant them (while still young) to where they are to grow, spacing them at 60-90cm (2-3ft) intervals.

  • Sow: May to June or August to September
