    The deeply lobed foliage of this relatively compact form, emerge in spring in a bright, pinkish red flush. As it ages, the fiery colours become more subdued as the foliage becomes greener - and this green is then held throughout the summer. In autumn, the foliage once again starts to change colour, this time developing rich orange and red tones before being shed. Great in a pot on the patio, it's an outstanding addition to smaller gardens.

  • Garden care: Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
