A medium-sized, deciduous maple prized for its vibrant crimson autumn foliage that develops a rounded, symmetrical crown when given ample sunlight. Red clusters of tiny flowers in spring give way to pink-tinged seed pods, and the lustrous green leaves throughout summer have red stalks and emerge red-tinged. In autumn, the dramatic foliage transforms into varying shades of crimson red. ‘Red Sunset’ is an excellent choice for showcasing as a specimen plant in lawns, and thrives in moist, slightly acidic conditions, which are ideal for achieving the most vibrant autumn colours.
Incorporate plenty of well-rotted leafmould or compost into the backfill when planting. Ensure the tree is monitored for water during its first growing season in order to establish. Add a top-dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
