Nelumbo 'Red Shades' enchants with its vibrant crimson-hued flowers. Rising gracefully above the water's surface on long, slender stalks during the summer months, these solitary blooms add a dramatic flair to warmer, outdoor locations in the UK. With a rich history spanning millennia, this lotus holds profound cultural and spiritual significance, transcending its botanical beauty. As a rhizomatous perennial, it thrives in pond margins or shallow waters, its large, rounded leaves and fragrant blossoms creating a striking focal point in long summer garden ponds or water features.

  • Garden care:
Lotus tubers are delicate and should be handled with care, especially around the growing points. Plant the lotus in heavy clay loam or aquatic soil, maintaining a water level of about 5cm (2in) above the plant to ensure optimal growth conditions. During winter, the tuber can remain in place without additional frost protection but the plant does need a long, warm summer to produce new tubers so Nelumbo is best chosen for southerly or sheltered regions of the UK. Alternatively, plant in a large, black water container against a warm, south-facing wall. When pruning at the end of the year, never cut flower or leaf stems below the water level, as roots and tubers use stems (even dead ones) to help provide oxygen.
