Handmade from solid FSC-certified timber, the Conservation Bat Box is a high-specification habitat created with conservation professionals in mind.
Designed with twin vertical chambers, the interior is accessed via ladder-style grooves that allow the bat to climb into their preferred side.
A hinged roof, secured by a removable screw, allows licensed bat workers to easily access and inspect the chambers when necessary.
The open design allows bat droppings to fall to the floor, avoiding the need for cleaning by a licensed worker.
The durable box offers excellent insulation and is suitable for multiple species. As bats are susceptible to smell, the wood has been left untreated so as not to deter entry. Only a water-based paint has been applied to the front.
For best results, hang the box 2.5m-5m high on a building or mature tree using the pre-drilled recycled plastic hanger.
The ideal aspect is North, South West or South East so the box receives only part sun during the day. You are more likely to get an occupation if it is on an existing feeding or flight path.
Please note: bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes, therefore, must only be inspected by licensed bat workers.
However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance; look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box or observe from a distance at dusk when bats are exiting to hunt.
