There is, however, plenty more to grow than strawberries. You are unlikely to have the space for a dedicated fruit garden in a small plot, so it makes sense to look for planting opportunities in existing beds and borders. Many types of fruit will be right at home, offering colourful blossom and attractive fruits to add to the seasonal mix.

If you want to introduce a fruit tree, there are many dwarf and fan trained forms suitable for containers that can be used in practical ways around the garden, such as covering vacant walls and fences, and adding height and interest to borders. One convenient option in a small garden is to grow a ‘family’ apple or pear tree with two or three different varieties produced by a single tree. These varieties have been selected to pollinate each other, so that you can be sure of regular harvests.

The prickle-free blackberry ‘Oregon Thornless’ is an ideal choice for training over an arch producing it’s pretty pink blooms followed by luscious fruit in late summer, while blueberries also make very popular container fruits.
