A small, deciduous tree with attractive purple-red spring leaves that gradually darken to maroon in summer before turning bright crimson in autumn. Its palmate leaves with 7 deep lobes emerge in spring followed by small reddish flowers that may produce winged fruit in autumn. 'Sumi-nagashi' is a popular choice for small gardens looking for multi-season foliage colour, rounding off the year with an impressive autumn finale. This ornamental Japanese maple prefers neutral to acidic soil.

  • Garden care:
Japanese maples prefer a sheltered spot out of strong, cold and/or drying winds, and produce their best leaf colour with some sun. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted leafmould or compost into the backfill when planting. Ensure the tree is monitored for water during its first growing season in order to establish. Add a top-dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
