A tough and undemanding houseplant, Chinese evergreen is more tolerant than most to lower light levels. That makes it perfect for darker corners or hallways, where its long slender silver-green foliage (which is attractively patterned with darker green markings), will help add a splash of colour.

Aglaonema grows best in bright, indirect light but will cope well in lower light areas too. Let the top inch of soil dry out before watering, preferably with rainwater, and always use a pot with good drainage to avoid waterlogging (ensure the pot is not sitting in water within a decorative cover).
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep them looking their best. This plant prefers warm conditions, so keep it above 16°C (61°F) and away from cold draughts.
In winter, reduce watering and allow the plant to rest. Increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, especially in heated homes. Repot every few years in spring using a free-draining compost.
