Arenaria purpurascens is a low-growing, mat-forming evergreen perennial with small, lance-shaped, deep green leaves and delicate, star-shaped, purplish pink flowers. In bloom from late spring to early summer, pink sandwort thrives in well-drained soil and sunny locations. Perfect for spilling over rockeries and path edges, stone troughs and alpine beds, Arenaria offers plentiful pollinator opportunities for a wide range of beneficial insects.
Mountain sandwort prefers well-drained, gritty soil in sunny to partially shaded locations. When planting, space about 20-30 cm apart, and water moderately, allowing soil to dry between watering. Mulch with gravel for better drainage, and lightly fertilise in spring. Deadhead flowers and remove dead leaves to maintain appearance. Ensure good winter drainage to prevent root rot, and the plant should remain largely pest-free and low maintenance.
