A spectacular sight when in full bloom, Campsis × tagliabuana 'Indian Summer' is a fast-growing climber with attractive foliage, so it still looks lush and green when not in bloom. The trumpet-shaped flowers are a tropical-looking shade of peachy orange, and they appear in clusters in late summer and autumn.

Chinese trumpet vine looks great when trained over a sunny, sheltered wall or fence - and will need lots of space to spread out.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: August to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Plant Campsis in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally against a south or west-facing wall for warmth and protection from hard frosts. Provide strong support, such as a trellis or wall, as this vigorous climber can grow large.

Use well-draining, moderately fertile soil, and water regularly during the first growing season; once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage flowering. In colder areas, protect young plants from frost until they’re well-established.colder areas, protect young plants from frost until they’re well-established.
