Plump pointed buds appear on nodding stems in mid-spring, opening over the next few weeks to slightly ruffled, yellow-centred flowers. These bell-shaped blooms are a rich shade of reddish-purple and they look sublime against the backdrop of fresh green foliage. Relatively compact in habit, 'Brunette' is useful for covering walls and fences without taking over the whole garden, and it will quite happily thrive in a large pot, provided it is kept well fed and watered accordingly.

  • Garden care:
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
    • Humans: Skin allergen; Pets: Harmful if eaten
