'Praecox' is a deciduous herbaceous sub-shrub showcasing long, meandering stems adorned with deeply toothed pinnate leaves. Its profusion of star-like flowers, each with recurved pale milky-blue sepals, spans a generous 2cm (1in) width, enchanting from midsummer to early autumn. Excelling in borders, this non-clinging clematis, with its woody scrambling stems, effortlessly thrives and blooms for extended periods. While ideal for ground cover with its large and ample leaves, caution is advised when allowing it to weave through other shrubs, as its weight can be substantial, requiring robust support.

  • Garden care:
Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. In early spring cut back the previous year's growth (leaving it to overwinter) and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown.
    • Humans: Skin allergen; Pets: Harmful if eaten
