A rewarding clematis for smaller spaces or suitably large pots, this compact beauty bears bright azure star-shaped flowers up to 14cm (5in) across with notable, overlapping wavy-edged sepals and greyish-pink anthers at the centre provide a dashing contrast. After a brief autumn pause, the plant will bloom again, extending the vivid show into the shorter days. For prolifically blooming elegance on a petite frame, 'Sacha' fills gardens of any size with radiant floral stars.
Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where that the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. Otherwise, use a clematis root protector, or top-dress the rootball (avoiding the immediate crown), with a generous layer of shingle or pebbles. In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant - again avoiding the immediate crown.
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
