A long-standing favourite for growing outside as it's super reliable, performing well even in conditions that are less than perfect. It's also an absolutely prolific cropper, producing dozens and dozens of heavy cylindrical fruits about 20cm long from late summer onwards. Robustly healthy, it shows some resistance to most diseases, including cucumber mosaic virus.

  • Growing Instructions: Sow three or four seeds into a 9cm pot of seed compost in late spring and keep warm in a propagator or on a sunny windowsill. Once seedlings have produced three true leaves, pot on individually. After all threat of frost has passed, harden off carefully and plant into the final growing site allowing 60cm between plants. Protect young plants against slugs. Don't plant too deep, as this encourages stem rots: the top of the rootball should sit at the same level as the surface of the soil.

  • Sow: May-June

  • Harvest: August to September

  • Approximate quantity: 25 seeds
