Lax stems clothed in pointed leaves form a ground-hugging clump, which in autumn is studded with bright blue, trumpet-shaped flowers. These are attractively striped on their outer edges, and can be as large as 6cm, so when in full flower, the effect is very showy.

Gentiana thrives in moist but sharply drained, humus-rich, acidic to neutral soil in full sun or light shade. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, spacing 20-30cm (8-12in) apart, and water well to establish. Keep the soil consistently moist (never dry or waterlogged) and feed occasionally with an ericaceous fertiliser.
Mulching with leaf mould or pine needles helps maintain moisture and acidity. Hardy and low-growing, it spreads into mats of flowers in autumn, needing only the removal of faded growth in late winter.
In areas where the summers are hot and dry, they will need protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day.
