- Aralia cordata 'Sun King': A great foliage plant that quickly forms a handsome mound of large, golden-green (or lime-coloured in shadier spots) leaves, which are held on rich mahogany stems. The tropical-looking foliage is reason enough to choose this plant, as it will add structure and form as well as colour to the planting scheme. In late summer however, tall flowerspikes appear, smothered in rounded clusters of tiny white flowers, and later rounded black (inedible) fruit - a bonus! Grows to 1.2m.
- Matteuccia struthiopteris: This wonderful deciduous shuttlecock fern is at its most beautiful in spring when the large, pale green, lacy fronds start to unfurl and filter the sunlight. It is one of the best foliage plants for areas of moist, dappled shade and works particularly well planted in groups next to water or in a woodland garden in between deciduous trees. Grows to 1.7m.
- Hosta (Tardiana Group) 'June': This is a real showstopper. Its heart-shaped leaves are splashed with lime green and initially have a blue-grey wash, which gradually fades as the leaves mature throughout the summer. In July it produces spikes of lavender-grey trumpet-shaped flowers. It's a variegated sport of Hosta 'Halcyon' and makes a flourish at the front of a shady border, sheltered from cold, drying winds, or on its own in a container. The foliage is also invaluable for softening the edges of hard landscaping. Once established, its layers of leaves will suppress weeds, too. Grows to 40cm.
- Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen': Bright orange early summer flowers with yellow centres and deeply divided mid green leaves. These cheery, buttercup-like flowers are perfect for the middle of a moist border or for planting at the margins of a pond or stream. To prevent the roots from drying out apply a thick mulch layer around the base of the plant in early spring. Grows to 80cm.
- Planting tips:Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
Use these citrus shades to light up areas of partial shade - just make sure to water regularly if the soil is not naturally moist.
