This daylily produces masses of lightly fragrant, deep burgundy-red flowers, each with a yellow-green throat. 'Olive Bailey Langdon' will look wonderful when planted in drifts in a sunny mixed or herbaceous border, where it will add a bold shot of colour to the palette. The flowers are also edible (and are widely sold throughout east Asia for eating), so their petals make attractive additions to mixed salads, and they can even be used to dress a plate. The bright green, strap-like leaves are semi-evergreen in mild areas, and once established, they can form large clumps, which will suppress weeds and disguise the dying foliage of spring-flowering bulbs. - Garden care: Plant crowns at 60cm intervals in a sunny spot, making sure that their roots are firmed in, but their crowns are above soil level - then water well. Apply a generous 5-7cm deep mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown), and once the plant has started to bloom, deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage more to form. Lift and divide every three years in spring.
- Cats: TOXIC if eaten
