The soft, silvery blue, star-shaped flowers are a gorgeous sight in early spring when they first appear amongst the open clumps of slender foliage. An RHS AGM recipient, it is reliable and easy to grow in a sheltered spot, and the flowers have a light but sweet perfume. It's adaptable enough to be grown in small pots, or generous swathes throughout the garden, and it's a natural for gravel gardens or alpine beds. A member of the onion family, it's leaves will emit a pungent smell if they are gently brushed or bruised.

  • Garden care: Plant bulbs 10cm deep and 10cm apart from September to November. Provide a generous layer of protective mulch in autumn. In colder areas plant them into a pot so they can be over-wintered in an unheated greenhouse.
  • Humans/Pets: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
