Unlike other pyracanthas, this form has fewer thorns along the length of its stems, which makes it a lot easier to manage - without missing out on the abundance of late spring and early summer flowers, or glossy red autumn and winter berries. A showy and versatile evergreen, it offers year-round interest, and can be grown as a free-standing shrub, or tied onto a sturdy framework against a wall and used as an alternative to a climber (they're particularly useful for a north-facing aspect).

  • Garden care:
When planting incorporate plenty of well-rotted organic matter into the planting hole. Prune hedges in early to midsummer (checking for bird nests prior to cutting, and delaying if present). In early spring, trim out misplaced or crossing branches on free-standing shrubs. Tie in any shoots to extend the framework of wall shrubs, and shorten branches to about 2 or 3 leaves from the base after flowering to expose the berries.
    • Humans/Pets: Fruit are ornamental - not to be eaten
