Ideal for smaller spaces or large containers, this compact dwarf cultivated variety produces reliable crops without the need for support. Plants reach around 45cm (18in) tall and form a bushy shape, making them a practical choice for patios or raised beds.
Runner bean 'Hestia' offers attractive red and white bi-coloured flowers in summer, followed by long, straight, stringless pods up to 20cm (8in) in length. The pods are tender and full of flavour when picked young. It has good resistance to common diseases, and the self-supporting habit makes maintenance simple.
Great for gardeners who want to grow runner beans without canes or trellis. Regular picking will help prolong the harvest and keep plants productive.

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and enrich the soil with well-rotted compost before planting. If growing in pots, use a container at least 35cm (14in) wide and deep. Dwarf runner beans are self-supporting, so there's no need for canes though some twiggy branches or pea sticks might be prudent in windy sites.
Keep plants well watered, especially in dry spells, and protect seedlings from slugs. Check for blackfly early and hose off any clusters on shoot tips. Pick beans regularly once pods are finger-length to encourage further cropping and to enjoy them at their most tender.

Sow runner bean seeds from late spring, once the risk of frost has passed. Place seeds 5cm (2in) deep and about 20cm (8in) apart in well-prepared soil or in a large container filled with loam-based (John Innes) compost. Sow a couple of extra seeds at the end of the row or in separate pots to replace any that don’t germinate or get damaged by pests.
