- Position: full sun
- Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
- Garden care: Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and enrich the soil with well-rotted compost before planting. Support with sturdy hazel bean poles or bamboo canes.
Keep plants well watered, especially in dry spells, and protect seedlings from slugs. Check for blackfly early and hose off any clusters on shoot tips. Pick beans regularly once pods are finger-length to encourage further cropping and to enjoy them at their most tender.
Sow runner bean seeds from late spring, once the risk of frost has passed. Place seeds 5cm (2in) deep and about 20cm (8in) apart in well-prepared soil or in a large container filled with loam-based (John Innes) compost. Sow a couple of extra seeds at the end of the row or in separate pots to replace any that don’t germinate or get damaged by pests. - Sow: April to June
- Harvest: July to October
The long, slender beans of this productive scarlet-flowered variety are slow to develop seeds, meaning pods of runner bean 'Lady Di' can stay on the plant for longer before they become tough giving you more time to pick them. The stringless dark green pods grow to around 30cm (12in) long and have an excellent flavour. Harvest young to enjoy them at their most tender. The flowers are edible too and make a colourful garnish.
- Humans/Pets: Raw pods/beans harmful if eaten
