A much-loved and sought after conifer, which if left uncut, can form a large tree with needle-like dark green leaves and (on female plants), fleshy, red fruits. They make excellent hedges and can also be clipped for topiary - like these, which have been trimmed to form a dense 30-35cm diameter ball. Perfect for the patio, or for for framing an entrance, they can also be incorporated into a mixed border to add year-round structural interest.

  • Garden care:
Yews thrive in moist but well-drained soil and can be placed in full sun to to full shade, making them versatile for various settings, including borders. Water well as the plant establishes, then reduce watering, as yews prefer slightly drier conditions to avoid root rot. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser and trim established hedges in late summer. To successfully grow yew (Taxus baccata) in pots, choose a large container with drainage holes and fill it with a well-draining, loamy soil mix. Repot every 2-3 years or refresh the compost to maintain plant health.
    • Humans/Pets: TOXIC if eaten
