From mid to late summer, airy sprays of tiny, long-lasting, rich-mauve, pompom-like flowers are carried on slender dark purple stems above clumps of fern-like, grey-green leaves. 'Hewitt's Double' is a much sought-after double variety of meadow rue and is perfect for adding height to a range of planting applications. The delicate flowers can be prone to wind damage so these herbaceous perennials are best grown in a sheltered spot and supported by neighbouring plants or plant supports made from natural materials (see garden care notes below).

  • Garden care: When planting 'Hewitt's Double' incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole. Stake using plant supports made from natural materials (e.g. hazel or birch) before the flowers appear. Cut back the stems after flowering. Add a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the plant in spring. Once established, lift and divide congested plants in spring
