Forming an evergreen mat of aromatic mid-green foliage, this creeping thyme also produces lots of small white flowers in the summer. A wonderful choice for softening the edges of a path, where it will release its scent each time it is bruised or brushed past, it also looks great in a pot on a sunny patio.
This thyme thrives in full sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil, making it ideal for rock gardens, pathways, or as ground cover. When planting, space the plants about 20-30cm (8-12in) apart to allow them to spread unhindered. It prefers poor to moderately fertile soil, so avoid enriching the planting hole with too much compost or fertiliser. Water regularly until the plants are established, but once settled, they become more drought-tolerant and require less irrigation. Trim back lightly after flowering to maintain a neat appearance and to encourage dense growth. If the plant becomes woody, prune more severely in early spring to rejuvenate the plant. Ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent fungal issues, and avoid overwatering, especially in winter.
