A grand deciduous tree known for its variable yet typically broad conical form with upright branches that gracefully droop at the tips, adorned with shoots covered in a white-felted texture. The leaves of Tilia tomentosa are round and possess a dark green upper surface, while underneath they sport a silvery-white felt, creating a mesmerising effect, particularly on windy days. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into a vibrant yellow, painting a classic lime tree display. The fragrant, creamy-white flowers are a delight, and hold a magnetic attraction for bees.

  • Garden care:
Avoid very dry conditions and keep out of strong winds. Limes prefer alkaline to neutral soil, but they will tolerate acidic soil. It requires minimal pruning, but do remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when it is completely dormant. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole.
