This tender evergreen perennial climber will quickly cover a sunny wall, arch or obelisk and produce large, sweetly-scented flowers from midsummer to the first frosts. Plant Cobaea scandens near a window or busy pathway to enjoy the perfume. It needs a sheltered, sunny wall or trellis and moist but well-drained soil for the best flowers.
Cup and saucer plant is a vigorous climber that thrives in the UK and is commonly grown as a fast-growing annual. Plant out only after the last frosts, in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter added. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with strong support such as a trellis, arch, or pergola, as it will quickly scramble several metres in a season if conditions allow.
Sow the seeds horizontally, 1cm deep in deep pots using freely-draining compost and water well. Keep them warm under glass (ideally at 18°C or 64°F) and pot on when large enough to handle.
Harden off gradually and plant outside after all risk of frost has passed. Plants can be overwintered under glass, but are mainly grown as annuals in the UK.
