A beautiful, spreading tree with massive, heart-shaped, bright yellow leaves, which emerge in spring with a bronze flush. Then, in mid- to late summer, tall panicles of white flowers appear, usually followed by slender pods. Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea' is a medium to large deciduous tree that is best grown as a specimen in a lawn to fully appreciate its beauty. It will eventually grow into a large tree, though not to the height expected of a single-stemmed form.

  • Garden care:
Take care to position Catalpa in a sheltered area, away from strong winds. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Protect young plants from frost in very cold weather since unripened wood is susceptible to frost damage.

After planting, maintain a clear, circular area around the base of the stem approximately 50cm (20in) in diameter, keeping it free of grass and weeds. Apply a layer of mulch over this area each spring, taking care to keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Water during dry spells for the first couple of years. Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.
    • Humans/Pets: Fruit are ornamental - not to be eaten
