With its glossy, deep purple foliage evolving from newly emerging crimson leaves, 'Blackberry Gem' offers striking year-round interest as an evergreen shrub. Large clusters of ivory flowers appear in sunny conditions, adding seasonal contrast to its lush, leathery leaves. Best planted in full sun for vibrant colour, this versatile shrub also thrives in partial shade, making it ideal for hedges or as a backdrop in garden borders. In frost-prone areas, it can be trained as a wall shrub against a south or west-facing wall for added protection and visual appeal.

  • Garden care:
To encourage a profusion of bright young leaves in late spring or summer shorten the stems of established specimens by up to 15cm (6in), to just above an outward-facing bud. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in early spring.
    • Humans/Pets: Fruit are ornamental - not to be eaten
