Masses of golden yellow, lipped flowers appear on prickly, arching grey-green leaves in May and June among slender, blue-green leaves. This compact broom forms a natural dome shape, is drought resistant, and makes an ideal companion to Mediterranean-style plants, particularly those with silvery foliage. It will also thrive in a windswept environment. It performs best on a sunny site with poor to moderately fertile soil.
Garden care:
Genista is best grown in full sun and very well-drained soil, even poor or stony. Best planted in spring or autumn, and watered well until established, then kept on the dry side, as it dislikes heavy feeding and overwatering. After flowering, lightly trim back shoots but avoid cutting into old wood. Hardy to around –15 °C, it’s ideal for walls, rock gardens, or containers, needing little care beyond occasional shaping.
