This undemanding deciduous shrub is a spectacular sight in autumn when its green leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red. Aronia × prunifolia 'Brilliant' is very pretty in summer, when its stems are laden with sprays of hawthorn-like, white (or occasionally pink-flushed) flowers. Purplish-red berries ripen in the autumn, and can be harvested and used to make jams, jellies or tarts.
Chokeberry is a hardy shrub that thrives in most soils, including heavy clay, provided the ground is not waterlogged. Plant in full sun or partial shade, spacing shrubs to allow airflow and room for their natural spreading habit. Once established, they are low maintenance beyond watering during prolonged dry spells and applying a mulch in spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
For pruning, little is needed in the early years other than removing dead, damaged, or crossing stems. On mature plants, improve shape and vigour by taking out about a third of the oldest stems at the base each February or March. This encourages strong new shoots and helps maintain regular flowering and fruiting.
