Perfect for sheltered courtyard gardens, the wonderfully compact Abelia × grandiflora Tricolor Charm has crimson red stems that bear pink-tinted green and white variegated foliage.

Plant as a low hedge or in large pots and containers, from July, delicate white, trumpet- shaped flowers bloom until the first frosts.

  • Garden care:
Choose a sunny position in well-drained soil. Incorporate well-rotted compost or manure and a sprinkling of mycorrhizal fungi into the planting hole to encourage strong root development. Water regularly during the first year to help establish the plant.

Pot grown plants will thrive in a loam-based (John Innes) compost.

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering. In autumn, lightly trim back faded blooms to maintain a neat shape. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged stems and apply a mulch of organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and improve soil health.

In colder regions, provide winter protection for young plants by adding a layer of mulch around the base. Pot grown plants may benefit from a move to a south facing, protected location, and a wrapping of horticultural fleece if low temperatures become severe or prolonged.
