Bred for its excellent flavour, this sturdy and reliable calabrese is also high-yielding and disease-resistant, especially to white rust.
Calabrese 'Green Magic' produces its big, generous heads early in the season, especially from sowings made under glass in spring. Once the main head is cut, it produces a second harvest of smaller, deliciously tender side-shoots from the stem.
Store gluts of calabrese by trimming sprigs and blanching in boiling water for a couple of minutes before packing loosely into bags and freezing.

Calabrese thrives in cool, moist conditions and benefits from consistent watering throughout its growing period, particularly during dry spells when the developing heads need adequate moisture to prevent bolting.
Space plants about 45-60cm (18-24in) apart for proper air circulation and consider succession planting every 2-3 weeks for continuous harvest. The plants perform best in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Watch for common pests like cabbage white caterpillars and aphids through regular inspection.
Calabrese is ready to harvest when the central head is firm and tight, typically 10-12 weeks after sowing - cut the main head with a sharp knife about 15cm (6in) down the stem in early morning. After harvesting the main head, leave the plant in place as it will produce smaller side shoots over the following weeks, extending your harvest period.

Early sowings can be made into pots or seed trays under cover: pot on as the seedlings grow. Or sow later in spring into shallow drills in a well-prepared seedbed, thinning seedlings to 5cm (2in) apart.
When plants reach 15cm (6in) tall transplant to where they are to grow, spacing about 30cm (12in) apart. Protect from slugs and net against pigeons.
