Recently introduced to the UK, this Brazillian 'tree' fern does eventually form short stem as it matures. It's for the newly emerging bright red fronds that it is most sought after. These fronds are a good size, and they form a distinctive shuttlecock shape so it is quite architectural. As they mature the fronds of Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano' turn bronze, then finally settle on a rich green colour as the season progresses.

Protect newly planted ferns from frost. Plant in a shady, damp spot with well-draining, acidic or neutral soil. Ensure the planting hole is enriched with plenty of well-rotted leaf mould, composted pine needles, or garden compost to improve moisture retention and soil structure.

While this fern is low-maintenance once established, regular watering is important, especially in dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist.

Remove any dead or damaged fronds in spring to promote healthy new growth and maintain its tidy appearance. Mulch around the base to retain moisture, but avoid piling it up against the crown to prevent rot. Protect over the winter with cloche or horticultural fleece as low temperatures can be damaging.
